Islam is most certainly not evil

Reader comment on item: The Evil Isn't Islam

Good Lord. I've spent about an hour sitting here, reading the comments in incredulous silence... Islam is most certainly not evil. A tiny sect of self-proclaimed Muslims are evil, yes; but they are not followers of the Islamic religion! I am an agnostic with Christian, Jewish, and Muslim friends.

One of my closest friends is Muslim. She is devout in her faith, but does not submit herself to the cultural - not religious, cultural - norms held to Muslim women. She does not hide her face or her hair. She wears modest clothing, yes, but out of respect for herself - something many other women could stand to learn. Yet this kind woman has been subjected to so much prejudice and hate from fools ...who do not understand her religion!

I will agree that some Islamic nations are somewhat behind, culturally. But this is a matter of culture. Islam, at its origin, preached equality - at least, equality for the day - among men and women. But as the religion spread, it mixed with a culture that twisted its teachings of peace. And you high-and-mighty Christians, get off your high horses! Christianity has committed vicious acts of equal or worse violence as the early Islam empires! Surely you learned about the Crusades? The Inquisition? Witch-burnings?

Your culture has been less tolerant of "infidels" than Islam. At least Muslims - the proper ones - are taught that Christians and Jews are 'people of the book'; monotheists who should be respected and treated as equals. Christianity has rarely showed that consideration throughout history. The answers do not lie with this hatred. They lie with tolerance. Give an example of peace instead of war for a change and people will follow! It may take awhile - it might be difficult to forsake that oh-so-desirable revenge - but violence only feeds violence, hatred only feeds hatred! If you want to give tolerance a chance - and for the sake of peace, please, try - read The Faith Club. Three women of very different faiths can live as friends - this is hope for our bloody world. Stop feeding the monster.
