questions for Dr. Pipes

Reader comment on item: The Evil Isn't Islam

Submitted by Infidel (Canada), Sep 13, 2006 at 00:07

Dr. Pipes, I ask this question with all due respect and I hope that you will answer me. Do you believe Osama bin Laden and Zawahiri, have good understanding of the Qur'an, and can their behavior be attributed to the Qur'an and the Hadiths? And if not, what would you attribute their ideology and actions to?

I do not know how to phrase the next question politely, so here goes. Do you believe that you have a better understanding of the Qur'an and the Hadiths than bin Laden and Zawahiri? Please, I do not mean any disrespect. I absolutely believe that they have a better understanding than me and are acting on it.

Daniel Pipes replies:

The Qur'an and Hadith can be understood as one wishes; there is no good or bad understanding. There are humane and barbarian understandings - and theirs fit into the latter.

I do not ever declaim on the Qur'an and how it should be interpreted. I am a historian of Muslims, not an Islamic theologian.
