Bosnia also a refuge for the persecuted

Reader comment on item: The Evil Isn't Islam

Submitted by Mirko Bodul (United States), Jul 30, 2002 at 10:20

Bosnia, ruled by the Turks, was a very tolerant place for the persecuted of Europe. You were allowed to practice your religion and live in peace if you were a non Muslim.

All you had to do was to pay a yearly tax. If you converted to the Muslim faith, you did not have to pay the tax.

You will find a fair number of German and French last names in the region.
