...When Jesus (PBUH) was gone there were different versions of christianity and the one that became dominant was the western/northern european brand of christianity (it was made palatable to these people by introducing pagan customs and rituals by Paul). The version that was around the meditranean (middle eastern and african) and eastern europe was labeled heretic and it was close to Islam. So in other words what Jesus did was provide ground-work in these parts of the world for Muhammad (PBUH). The western european christians were already at war with christians who did not believe that Jesus was divine and trinity. When, after these people readily accepted Islam, the fight just got worst. This is the background of crusades, roughly.

And to get support to go to war fantastic stories were made up to malign the prophet of Islam. Some people still believe this fiction to be true. And this still goes on even today, i.e., tell lies to get support for war.
