God and Evil in the World

Reader comment on item: Pope Benedict XVI and the Koran
in response to reader comment: Evil Proves No God?

Submitted by Robert (United States), Jul 8, 2015 at 15:03

Dear Rich - Go back and read what I wrote. I did NOT say that the existence of evil is proof of God's non-existence. Nor did I imply that it's man-made or our imagination. It exists. Period. And has always been with us. This fact proves nothing in itself regarding the existence or non-existence of God.

Religious people have answered this question by essentially saying if there was no evil in the world, how would we know what it is to be good? Because there is evil they explain is why we have free will, to chose and know the difference between. This is circular reasoning like Francis of Assissi saying, If there were no God, then why would we pray?

I disagree with you regarding my logic being contradictory and I'm sorry to disappoint you by letting you know that I'm a very happy, satisfied, self-made person. I have no misery in my life, largely in part because I don't have others telling me what "God" wants me to do. I'm not a bad person. I am an ethical and moral person and this has contributed to my success. Actually, the golden rule has mostly been my guide...and it's worked. By the way, this is not a Biblical creation or phophetic writing. It's been around from more than 2,000 years BEFORE Christ and has been adopted by virtually every religion on earth.

Regarding "God's standard for what is good", this is what MAN has told us is God's standard. "God" also told the crusaders to sack Jerusalem and kill every man, woman and child and "let God sort them out". Huh? Whose std. was that?

Let's not forget that it was God who used Job as a token in a bet with the devil. Job suffered mercilessly over this little game, including the loss of his children. The story goes to say that he got everything back and more because of his faith. Except his children. Guess what? Dead is dead. He never got to see them again. For what God did to Job, giving his children back would have been the least of the "right" thing to do by any stds.

As for design for the universe, whydoes there have to be a design?

- Robert
