Catholics higher-ups have long provided 'cover' for Islam.

Reader comment on item: Pope Benedict XVI and the Koran

Starting with Vatican II and continuing right up to the present day*, few organizations have been more willfully blind to the dangers of radical Islam than the Vatican, to the point that official Catholic theology hold that devout Muslims are on a road to salvation more or less equivalent to devoted Christians. Conveniently forgotten are the many verses in the Bible that mandate faith in Jesus Christ ("I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life, nobody comes to the Father except thru Me." "There is no other Name by which we must be saved." and others), vs. Islam's view of Jesus Christ as a minor prophet. My personal opinion is that the Vatican believed that Islam could somehow be brought into some kind of hands-off arrangement, as if two rival companies arranging to divide a market.

Now, the Vatican finally awakens to realize that Islam is not interested in dividing the market, and in fact Islamic leaders speak openly of minarets on Saints Peter's Basilica. Lest anyone think that this is impossible, note that Hagia Sophia in Instanbul, arguably the most photographed mosque in the world, was a Byzantine Christian cathedral for over 1000 years.

*Even in the aftermath of 9/11, a Catholic publication arrived at my house, with its feature article: "Cross and Cresent Moving Forward Together," or something similar. The gall of publishing such a piece when the World Trade Center was still smoldering (literally) was breathtaking.
