If Islam is Stuck, Should it be Pushed - or Pulled?

Reader comment on item: Pope Benedict XVI and the Koran

Submitted by David Schachter (United States), Jan 23, 2006 at 11:44

I understand the difference of opinion between Pope Benedict XVI and Daniel Pipes regarding whether Islam would permit a reinterpretation of the Koran. However, if the pope is wrong and Pipes is correct, there remains the issue of the head of the Roman Catholic Church suggesting to all of Islam how they should run their religion. I am Jewish, and I would not appreciate the pope telling all of Judaism what the Torah really means. Changes in Islam must, at a bare minimum, have the appearance of emanating from within.

Accomplishing that is one of the greatest challenges the world faces.
