So what?

Reader comment on item: Pope Benedict XVI and the Koran

Submitted by YochevedMiriam (Israel), Jan 17, 2006 at 22:38

It's all well and good for non-Muslims to say that the Koran can be interpreted -- but so what?

Just as we Jews and Christians would not tolerate 'outsiders' telling us how our holy books must be interpreted, I can't imagine Muslims reacting in any other way.

The question for non-Muslims is not, CAN the Koran be reinterpreted, but rather, how do we inspire Muslims to WANT to reinterpret it.

I can't even imagine a Muslim who thinks he needs permission from a non-Muslim to reevaluate his faith. Nor one who would say "Gee whiz, I didn't know that. Okay, sure" when a non-Muslim tells him it's permissible to reinterpret it.

So the Pope and his followers can hold forth all they want to on this subject -- it's no more relevant as applied to Muslims than if the Pope were to hold forth on the Halacha of Shabbat, dictating to us Jews what was permissible for us to do or not.

Why would Muslims care what the Pope thinks? How many legions does he have, anyway?
