How right you are. Unfortunately, the western leaders don't understand this or don't want to understand it and instead keep hoping for Islam's followers to change it. Muslims have no incentive to do it.

Besides, they think its world's perfect religion which can't be changed by men. Ask any Muslim if he sees any need to reform his religion. The answer will be a resounding "No". It seems that the Muslims will be forever fighting this war with non-Muslims. As you said the only way to reform Islam is "by straightforward defeat", or be subjugated by Islam.
