Existence of Hell

Reader comment on item: The Pope and the Koran
in response to reader comment: Physician, heal thyself.

Hell in the traditional sense is gone. Hell is not eternal damnation into a firey pit sanctioned by God. It is the separation from God. God is love, is paradise, is all that is good. Hell is the absence of God. Therefore, the traditional sense of the word is gone.

Any Hell is self-created through sin. God is the most merciful, and is all good. He would not force us into pain, we can only do that ourselves. Thus we must still live Godly lives of love and forgiveness.

Here is a quote the late Pope John Paul II

"the images of hell that Sacred Scripture presents to us must be correctly interpreted. They show the complete frustration and emptiness of life without God. Rather than a place, hell indicates the state of those who freely and definitively separate themselves from God, the source of all life and joy. This is how the CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH summarizes the truths of faith on this subject: 'To die in mortal sin without repenting and accepting God's merciful love means remaining separated from him for ever by our own free choice. This state of definitive self-exclusionfrom communion with God and the blessed is called 'hell'(n. 1033)'.
