It is a fact that Mohammad had several wives. The Koran permits more than one wife (freely up to to 4) provided that the husband can maintain fair treatment of each and is able to support them,. But it suggests against this because most men are unable to fulfil those conditions satisfactorily. Remember that it was then and in some instances still is a strong cultural practice even for child brides to be wed for reasons that are very different to westerners marriages. The strengthening of family ties and even ethnic relationships likely comes in whereas in the west it is less so. Just because cultural and other ties are foreign to some people does not necessarily make them unfair and wrong.
