Just another interpretation...of so many others!

Reader comment on item: Pope Benedict XVI and the Koran

While this interpretation of Taha's has much to say for itself as a modernizing influence and certainly, as a voice for reason, it is still merely just one of many interpretations found within the body of Islamic theology. There is no evidence that it is being embraced by any great number of "peace" loving Muslims as their vehicle for bringing Islam into the 21st Century. It is merely one among many.

Each interpretation, as in each Christian denomination, has its own followers. However many interpretations though, that might be found in Christianity, there is still a core belief that Jesus Christ is a living divine being, whose life was sacrificed for the greater good of humanity. All else is mere comment. The Muslim core belief that the Koran is absolute and unchangeable does make it un-editable by most Muslims, which would be apostasy in their own minds.

While we may find Islamic interpretations that suit arguements for hopefulness, the fact is that the great majority of Muslims do not embrace this forward looking outlook of Taha's, nor are they ready to turn from their immediate set of beliefs to merely suit the West.

I believe the Pope has it right on this subject! His statement is born of great depth of knowledge, years of experience in examining theological issues, and certainly, a desire for Catholics to, while embracing ecumenism, not be blinded by false hopes of Islam turning on a dime in a different direction.
