Gospel of Peter is Gnostic

Reader comment on item: A Christian Boom
in response to reader comment: The first Gospels

Submitted by Servant of Christ (United States), Jan 13, 2007 at 00:33

So why is not the Gospel of Peter not part of the New Testament? It is said to be witten around 70-130 Ad.

Because the Gospel of Peter was not chosen for the canon. It is does not match up to the undisputed four Gospels. Besides, Peter worked with Mark to write the gospel of Mark, it would make no sense if Peter worked with Mark so that they would write two Gospels (that would be identical). And the content in the Gospel of Peter is a bit outrageous. In the Resurrection, a walking, talking cross comes out of the tomb and speaks to the disciples. This leads to the suspicion that it was a gnostic work (and thus, pseudepigraphical).

May God Bless You
