Same Church?

Reader comment on item: A Christian Boom

Karen comments:

"The Catholicism of the barrio is not the Catholicism of the US, or even the more intensely "Irish" church of the US."

I suppose it depends on what you find important. They all say the same creed, read the same scriptures, hold the same doctrines, and have the same Pope - amazing unity for completely different cultures. Perhaps Catholics more likely to give lip service to, rather than follow, the teachings of their church (read - Western/Northern) are dying out even as their church is growing - bottom line, even more unity.

An odd sidenote is that Protestants are going the other way and are splintering in record numbers - last count 30,000+ denominations hence even less unity. The larger ones - Lutherans, Anglicans, etc. are imploding. As more Protestants become less institutionalized, this does not bode well for Protestant unity or the spread of any standard Protestant Christian doctrine.
