Dear Dr Pipes:

The reader Vikrant correctly identifies that affinity to violence is a major problem with Islam. One aspect of this issue that many people do not realize is that if your purpose is to fit all people into the same mold, violence is your only option. So violence is Islamic societies is inevitable unless the Islamic doctrine is reinterpreted and followed not literally but in spirit.

This fact must be realized more by Muslims than non-Muslims but, sadly, Islamic thought leaders are rarely involved in this kind of analysis.
