Comparison of Anti-Judaism in Old and New Christianities

Reader comment on item: A Christian Boom

Submitted by Isaac Horowitz (United States), Nov 26, 2002 at 10:04

Your article is very important and thought provoking. Thank you for sharing your insight. The following is critical, in my opinion. The old Christianisty, both Catholic and Protestant, were saturated with Jew hatred, both in the New Testament and in the writings of the Christian Fathers. There was also implacable hatred and cruety towards the dissident Christian sects, who preferred in the 630s the invading Arabs, over the Orthodox existing Christian rulers. The Jews lived relatively amicably with the European pagans from the end of the Roman Empire until about 700 or so. It took the Christian clerics a few hundred years to instill in them the virulent Jew hatred, which was an important source of the Holocaust, and is today revealing itself in the European antagonism towards Israel, and sympathy towards the Arabs.

Of course, the above is also true of Protestantism.

My question is: Which way the new Southern Christianity? As a Jew, I fervently hope it is not going the way of the Old one. What can we do about it?

I hope you will address yourself to this crucial question. Thank You. Sincerely.
