No matter which Holy Book you read there is both a message of love and condemnation. Is it not in our intellectual abilty to interpret the message being given. After all most religions also allow for forgiveness.

Shouldn't we be able to look back at historical beginnings of Catholicism and see the mistakes within it's extremist and violent past and hopefully learn from them.
