Reader comment on item: Pope Benedict Criticizes Islam [in Regensburg]

Submitted by Canadian Chris (Canada), Sep 22, 2006 at 11:32

Faith without reason is faith misplaced. If a person chooses to believe something that is not based on reason, that person will struggle always aginst those that use reason. We have more examples of wrongheadedness(revenge killings, Intolerance, gender inequality, cultural bullying, etc.) coming from the muslim world, than examples of reasonable discussion of differences.

Currently the Muslim Brotherhood BARELY accepts the Pope's conciliation, but they are in the minority 'it would appear'. It would serve Islam well to remember that appearances are what the world uses to judge and that the judgement that Islam is facing is due to the appearance of a non-tolerant, expansionist religion. Tolerance is the key to peace, not control and domination.

The tolerant will rise up and fight against intolerance when forced to but we are witnessing an amazing thing in our world, the apology by the Pope, when it was unwarranted(in my opinion) to preserve peace. The Pope does not speak for me, but I have taken the time to read his speech and as far as religion goes, it shows a beautiful evolution of Catholic Christianity toward an era of reason. The days of the crusades and inquisition are gone and lessons learned from history. Now we walk a fine line between becoming intolerant ourselves and fighting for ideological freedom.

Peace

Chris
