Reader comment on item: Pope Benedict Criticizes Islam [in Regensburg]

Submitted by TL Miller (United States), Sep 19, 2006 at 19:03

It was obvious, looking through the responses posted to the Burning Issues question of whether the Pope should have apologized that most responses were gut-level and based on feelings while Daniel Pipes's comments were logical and thought out.

When it comes right down to it maybe I'm also reacting at gut level but Barbara Sofer's views mirror my own. We too often appear to fear reprisal or the chiefly Western fear of offending someone and are virtually silenced. Until we stand up to their verbal challenges and, to paraphrase Shakespeare, to hold as 'twere the mirror up to immoderate Islam and force them to see themselves as they are shown to us. There is the chance that this tactic will work no better than others that have been tried but until we employ it we won't know.
