The Pope's Apology to Islamists

Reader comment on item: Pope Benedict Criticizes Islam [in Regensburg]

Submitted by Drew Snider (Canada), Sep 19, 2006 at 15:28

Actually, I'm more than a little surprised that the Pope was surprised at the reaction. Didn't the "careful with the cartoon" memo get sent to the Vatican?

Seriously, though, any person or group which is in the wrong has that tendency to react in the same way if they're told flat-out that they're wrong. Like children told they can't have that cookie until they eat their vegetables, they stamp their feet and scream "you hate us!" or (in a milder tone) "we are insulted!" until they get pacified with that cookie. They don't actually attempt to contradict the statement: they just hope that, by claiming discrimination, hatred, deep personal offence, or whatever, they'll deflect attention away from the truth. Oh, and by the way: such people thrive on apologies, so no "sono rammaricato" is ever enough.
