The debate that should have been.

Reader comment on item: Pope Benedict Criticizes Islam [in Regensburg]

Submitted by Vinodgupt (United States), Sep 19, 2006 at 13:29

It is sad that the vatican has backed away from the debate that should have been. The Pope quoted that the Prophet brought new was "evil and inhumane......". The demonstration by the Muslims was a foregone conclusion but instead of expressing "regret " by the Pope, debate should have been started whether this assertion of the quote had any basis in the Koran, the Ahadith and subsequent history of Islam. Are the words of the Koran conducive to Peace among different religions? Does the Koran hold other religions to be equal to Islam? What does the Koran say of the unbelievers of Allah's revelations?

It is time an open debate is held on compatibilty of different relgions.

Debate should have been further extended to -- Can religions which claim exclusive rights coexist? Christians claim "Salvation can achieved only through Jesus" and the Muslims (The Koran) claim "Islam is the Only True faith". Both cannot be right as they are completely contradictory - one has to be wrong.

Neither says -- there are many religions in the world and no one is the final authority. Each religion (faith) is just a path. No religion has exclusive right or authority. This is what we believe and others are free to follow their own path.

Unless such a spirit takes hold of relgious thought long lasting peace among different religions is unlikely to come.
