Reader comment on item: Pope Benedict Criticizes Islam [in Regensburg]

Submitted by Iraqi-American (United States), Sep 19, 2006 at 14:00

The comments made by the Holy Father, as well as the chaos that is sure to ensue, have been long overdue. The world must finally take a long look at the effects that Islam has had on the world. Eastern Muslims believe that they can persecute other faiths, take human life as they please, and cost the world billions of dollars in damage.

All this, yet nobody is allowed to say what we all believe: This is Wrong! Their Western counterparts, however, are even more devious. They sit quietly and watch while their brethren are terrorizing the world. They take their children to western schools, go to their western jobs, and then have the nerve to tell their neighbors that, "this is not what true Islam is about".

Where is their outrage and criticism of the extremists' interpretation of the Koran? Where is their strong message to the Islamic leaders overseas that they do not support their exploitation of the Koran? There is none. However, just wait and see. All of these Western Muslims who have been so quiet and slow to speak out against the actions of their "misunderstood brothers", will now suddenly find new life and energy in speaking out against the Holy Father. They will blame the evil deeds of Muslims on the "outrage that the Pope has caused". They will fail to address the fact that when a peaceful pope was in charge (John Paul II) that he was mocked, degraded, and nearly killed by Muslim believers. They need an excuse for the extremists' actions, so when the Holy Father shows courage by finally saying out loud what we all believe he is vilified.

Are we to believe that Muslims have a universal amnesty against criticism? Why is it accepted that Muslims can bomb churches, murder nuns, and persecute Jews and Christians, yet nobody is allowed to draw a cartoon of Mohammed or say that the Koran has cultivated evil thoughts? Does anyone speak of the numerous cartoons drawn in Islamic newspapers that mock Christ or the Jewish people? Does anyone raise a question when Islamic leaders give speeches that ridicule other faiths, or say that America is indeed Satan?

If we continue to close our eyes to the atrocities that are being committed by the Muslim Faith, and are forced to keep our mouths shut when we want to speak out about these atrocities, then we are conceding that their faith is more credible than our faith. We are conceding that the lives and wills of Muslims, trump the lives and wills of the people of our own denominations. In Short we are conceding that Islam is right and our own religions are wrong.

Pope John Paul II was a great man, and he was very peaceful, as is a Lamb. However, it is time that we face Islam with a Lion, because that is the only thing that they will respond to. IF ISLAM CAN DEGRADE OUR RELIGIONS WITH HATE SPEECH, THEN WE MUST BE ABLE TO CONFRONT ISLAM WITH THE TRUTH. It is time for not only the Holy Father, but also Jewish and Political leaders to call for stronger support from Westernized muslims and accountability from their Eastern counterparts.
