I think in his own way the Pope is hoping the same thing that most of us in the west are hoping... that somehow reasonable followers of the Muslim faith will rise up, smack the extremists in the head and say "what the heck are you thinking?"

Unfortunately that type of thinking only seems to draw death from the extremists in the radicalized countries in the middle east. It would help things if the religious leaders in Saudi Arabia would call for more moderation as they have the credibility of being at the religious center of the religion. That doesn't seem to be happening. Benedict did give them an opening by making it a public issue... a chance for them to make true the statements that Islam is a peaceful religion.

Still, as I was taught in church, we all brothers, all children of God. There will be no "WWIII Europe" to resolve this problem. All we can do is push (and pray) for reason to assert itself.
