in response to reader comment: Aristotle and the Muslims

Submitted by Maggie4Life (Australia), Sep 23, 2006 at 01:05

LeaNdr,

Aristotle was an ancient philosopher who existed even before Jesus Christ. Hellenism was a dominating influence in Judea and elsewhere at the time of Jesus Christ, and had an influence even on Roman (Latin) thought.

The school of Alexandria that was started by Clement and had as one of its teachers Origen existed well before Muslims existed. Another who was influenced by the Hellenic thought of Aristotle was St. Augustine. There were many others who existed well before Muslims, and they had a dominating influence on the Church.

The Greeks were well known for their philosophers, and to his credit, even St. Paul took on the Stoics and the Epicureans, thus engaging in the language of reason when bringing the Good News to Athens.

As usual the revisionist Islamic scholars have tried to hijack Aristotle, but the claim that Aristotle was read amongst Muslims first is a load of hooey.
