Reader comment on item: Pope Benedict Criticizes Islam [in Regensburg]
in response to reader comment: puzzled

You asked, "Would it be OK to begin a discussion with such quotes and then suggest that this is part of inter-faith understanding towards jews?"

-Sure it would. Freedom of speech is a wonderful thing. Now would it be a pertinent discussion? Nope. Would Catholics and Protestants commit carnage across our world over it? Nope.

You asked, "The bottom-line here: what is the goal of this talk given by the pope?"

-Probably to discuss a PERTINENT, CURRENT, modern-day issue that is causing evil and violence and bloodshed all over OUR world. Maybe the Pope believes that is his duty. Should all of us be scared silent by the Muslims? Should everyone be silenced due to rotten things written in the past by Catholics and Protestants about the Jewish? Or the Pope's 'mental masturbation' comment about buddhist practice? When did we lose our right to speak out? I'm a white American. Did I somehow lose my right to speak out against racism because early Americans mistreated Indians and blacks?
