The Pope should not apologize

Reader comment on item: Pope Benedict Criticizes Islam [in Regensburg]

Submitted by Ron Thompson (United States), Sep 19, 2006 at 14:53

There is something schizophrenic about the aggressive preparations and actions of Western authorities against the Islamic plotting of mass murder throughout the world*, and our continued apparent assumption (including by Daniel Pipes) that there is some majority population of
peaceful Moslems. If there is such a majority (which I doubt) they are certainly passive and awol with regard to the loud worldwide minority which is unanimously calling for hatred and violence.

I find it amazing to support a conservative Pope, but I do actually applaud Benedict's comments, and am hoping he doesn't debase himself with some abject apology. If his comments that Islam is a violent religion# - due to the violent personality and actions of its sole founding personage - ultimately amounts to a wake-up call to Western elites (the various Western public may be way ahead of them), then he will have performed an act of statecraft, perhaps on the same plane as his distinguished predecessor.

How can anybody be more worried about Moslem "sensitivities" than that our whole way of life - indeed the way of life of the whole world -
has been altered, at airports and public buildings and mass gatherings everywhere, by the need for sharply increased security, at the cost
of hundreds of billions of dollars, solely caused by the threat of Moslem violence?
How did we come to take all this granted, and at the same time, continue to be worried about the "hurt feelings" of Moslems?

My favorite TV image regarding the coverage of the Pope's comment is of Moslem women, enshrouded even over their faces, marching and screaming epithets, oblivious to the fact that they themselves are perfect images of Islam's profound misogyny.
