Is The Pope Pro-Israel, Too?

I would be intrigued to know what Dr. Pipes thinks about this Pope's views on Israel. Pope Benedict was recently criticized for not condeming terrorism against Israel, but I always wonder whether the Pope's statements on the subject are not controlled by those in the Vatican bureaucracy immediately below him.

Evidence for this Pope's pro-Israel orientation would be his criticism--prior to his assuming the papacy--of radical Islam as a Liberation Theology against Israel, as well as his suspected primary role in establishing relations between Israel and the Vatican.
