Considering the Pope's comments.

Reader comment on item: Pope Benedict Criticizes Islam [in Regensburg]

Submitted by Subvet (United States), Sep 20, 2006 at 03:54

As the head of the Catholic Church the Pope doesn't have the luxury of "speaking his mind" the way an American man on the street would. Not only does he have to consider the effect his remarks will have on the treatment of Catholics in the Muslim world, those remarks have to be in line with Catholic teaching. So he won't be blunt, he won't be abrasive and he won't back down past a certain point.

He'll speak the truth and speak as he feels is proper for the Vicar of Christ on Earth. If that seems too soft to non-Catholics, too harsh to Muslims, too faint-hearted for political conservatives or irresponsible for liberals I doubt he will really care. He's spoken the truth as he felt it should be spoken. Amen.
