why are people so filled with fear?

Reader comment on item: Was Barack Obama a Muslim?
in response to reader comment: Muslims can lie too can't they?

First of all I don't care if Obama is or was or isn't muslim, when did america become so xenophobic? I am tired of people that are filled with fear having such an impact on the political process. Why aren't we talking about the issues facing the American people instead of these games that republicans allways play trying to scare people into voting against their interests. Do people really believe that Obama is some kind of sleeper cell muslim? Have we all becaome so ignorant that we can be manipulated with fear so easily? I can allready see republicans responses that I am un-American , or not patriotic, or they will say i support terrorists it is so predictable. Republican rhetoric is so easy to see coming why don't they come up with some original thoughts?
