Re: Islam is a cultReader comment on item: Was Barack Obama a Muslim? Submitted by Kiana (United States), Feb 20, 2008 at 20:46 To RF: Just to correct you under no definitions of cult, the lack of being able to leave a religion isn't what defines a cult. As a child, my Lutheran pastor told my close friend when he chose to become a five percenter that no one can leave christianity, and even when you leave until the day you die you are a christian, you are just an apostate... and he said to him, once upon a time you would have died for that. And the truth is, even in christianity once upon a time you could die for that, and many heads rolled for less than apostacy. The only reason that why we have religion freedom in our country is because we have a secular government, always have.. the founding fathers wanted everyone to have the freedom to practice their Christianity the way they wanted to. Secondly, Just because there has been new movements in the late 1800's that have moved many muslims towards a more "radicalized" idealogy doesn't mean that the traditional forms are non existent. I converted to Islam 6 years ago, and started off in a sunni sufi community. MANY muslims all over the world (even under ground in saudi arabia) still practice the old Islam that was practiced since the death of the Prophet may peace be upon him and all other prophets. I believe and have read in the tradition of Iman Ghazali and people like Rumi, and you would be surprised how many if not most do. Its just people who get into the mainstream new fangled stuff that get caught up in the Salfi/wahabbi dawah and it isn't as wide spread as people think. More than it should be in my opinion but it isnt the majority. Anyways, I don't think that anyone is going to care about Barack Obama in the Muslim world, his mother wasn't muslim and i do believe that though he had some experience in Islam as a young child he never really considered himself muslim. They do say in Islam that if a child is born to a Christian mom and Muslim father that the child should take the religion of the father, but because something is supposed to be that way doesn't make it. IF the child never accepts islam he just isn't muslim, its not like Judaism where well if your mother is Jewish you'r e jewish.
