Obama is not a Muslim but...Reader comment on item: Was Barack Obama a Muslim? Submitted by Peter Herz (United States), Dec 30, 2007 at 21:41 This responds both to Dr. Pipes' article and the comments of Ken Besig. Speaking as a Calvinist Christian, I have serious reservations about the kind of "Christianity" Obama practices. I have no sympathy with either the kind of "Afrocentric" theology Obama's home congregation accepts or the Anglo-Israelism of certain racist cults that deny the humanity of non-whites and rail at the Jews for being "Satan's kids". Further, despite the Calvinist histories of both Congregationalism and the Evangelical and Reformed Churches which merged to form the United Church of Christ, it is an "anything goes" sort of liberal denomination. I suspect that, having been raised by a mother who seems to have been something of a spiritual eclecticist and having opted for one of the most theologically liberal denominations in Christendom, Senator Obama is the sort of person who would find any kind of traditional Islam too doctrinally hard-edged.
