"Interesting thought. Are we to assume then, that an individual who never knew their father well, learned he was an alcoholic, and a drug addict, in the time following his death."

YES!!! I do in fact know of people personally who have taken those exact steps in the absence of a father (one who died of a drug overdose before his child's birth, and the other whose father is still an abuser but unknown personally to child from birth) BOTH children ended up glorifiying drug life, one is now dead, the other is still using.
