i hope u had already got answer of your question, but if you are still in search then let me tell you .

if you really wish to understand Islam and Quran then you have to read complete sentence not half or part of sentence, result will be confusion and wrong perception about Quran and Islam.

The line you Quoted is part of Verse that only debating to the muslims that , once you have been embrace Islam, you have to follow all basic of Islam otherwise Allah have no mercy for disbeleiver or who become astray.

during that era, mostly people were polytheist or worshipper of many Gods or multiple Gods, so in this verse , Allah giving warning to those idolizer before showing his wrath because Allah is most merciful.
