Bosnia, ruled by the Turks, was a very tolerant place for the persecuted of Europe. You were allowed to practice your religion and live in peace if you were a non Muslim. All you had to do was to pay a yearly tax. If you converted to the Muslim faith, you did not have to pay the tax. You will find a fair number of German and French last names in the region.
