I really don't understand

I know diddly about Islam, but I know someone that's a Muslim and he told me the two local mosques have been taken over by extremists. I also read about the treatment of Christians in Kosovo. Then I see Muslims going on about how peaceful it is. It doesn't make sense when I see so much evil and death around the world dealt out from the hands of Muslims. :S:S
