Militant Islam must be Defeated First

I agree. Historically, there have been long periods of relatively tolerant Islamic rule. In the past, there have been times when the Islamic nations were more tolerant of Jews and various Christian sects that their Christian counterparts in Europe.

However, there is one historical point that you fail to mention. Each of those period of tolerant Islam were proceded by the decisive defeat of a more expansive, and aggressive version of Islam be the Christians in Europe. It is deluding ourselves to think that Muslim world as a whole is going to rise to the challenge of "emulating their fellow monotheists by modernizing their religion" until the current version of aggressive Islam has been decisively defeated.
