I would suggest reading a book by Joan Peters on this subject. Sephardic Jews have always been at the mercy of their Islamic
leaders.

Remember the Damascus Affair of the late 1800's. As a Syrian Jew this fiasco is deeply remembered by our community as well as many others. It was always Islam that was our tormenter.
