Reader comment on item: The Evil Isn't Islam

Submitted by kee (United States), Apr 4, 2003 at 02:59

The US is a democracy among many. We have found through experience that absolute power of a religious run state just as power of a dictator corrupts absolutely. For this reason we work to maintain a seperation between government and religion of any kind. It has been our experience that you cannot mandate morality. Morality comes from within a person. We have rules of conduct that are in place to protect the freedom and safety of the individual. You are free to practice what ever religion you want to practice freely and openly. Your neighbors might raise a few eyebrows if you pick one that no one has ever heard of but as long as you are not harming another you can think or say what you feel. You say 'A person is harming another by seducing another into a religion that is debase'. We say 'An adult has the rightful liberty to chose even if it is a debase and morally bankrupt path.' Religion and morality are a personal choices and you as an individual are ultimately responsible for your own actions and thoughts not government or other people.
