To Andrew---a rebuttal

Reader comment on item: The Evil Isn't Islam
in response to reader comment: all religion is evil

There is no evidence of G-d, but there is no evidence that G-d does not exist, either.

Religion provides much comfort, joy, inspiration, and structure to millions of people. As long as it is not overdone, how could that be bad?

Texts do not survive thousands of years unless they are artistically great. Everyone agrees the measure of a work of art is time. If sacred texts are not very, very great art, how do you explain their longitude?

Everything taken to the utmost extreme is evil. This applies not only to religion but to everything and anything.

If there is no G-d, how can life have meaning? If there is no Creator, then life is simply the result of a random collision of atoms. Do you really believe that that is ultimately what life comes down to---a random accident?

If there is no G-d, how do you explain the beauty of the sea, of the sunset, of your lover, of yourself? Pure logic alone could not have created such beauty.

Man cannot subsist on logic alone. Pure logic is merciless and cold. Man needs faith to psychologically survive. True atheism is emotional hell.

How can logic explain living and loving? Do you have a logical explanation for why you want to live or to love? No. Indeed, the most logical option is suicide.

You are advocating the same intolerance of belief that you criticize in traditional religion. You speak of religious wars as an example of why you hate religion. You forget that you are telling billions of people that their belief system is worthless. Is that not the same intolerance that caused the wars you speak of, only on a smaller scale? Your position is no less extreme than that of many fundamentalists.

You say, " you believe this but you cannot know this." Why is that a contradiction? You believe in atheism, yet you have no way of knowing it is true. "

"This is evil and people who support religion are evil sheep." Really? Everyone who supports religion is evil? You sound exactly like a terrorist: " Those who believe in what I don't believe in are evil."
