Reader comment on item: Confirmed: Barack Obama Practiced Islam
in response to reader comment: How does it matter if he is Muslim, Hindu, or Zorastrian?

Along with the fact that America was founded as a land of religious freedom, I agree with you 100%. I also don't care if my president is a Catholic, an Evangelical Christian, a Jew, a Muslim, a Hindu, or even a Wiccan. I just want he or she to get in there, do a good job, and work in the interests of the American people. Those who voted for Mitt Romney, for example, didn't care that he was Mormon. They cared because they felt he was the best, even though he ultimately lost.

Likewise, I don't care what Barack's religion is. Nor, for that matter, do I care that John McCain (a truly great American) was born in the Panama canal (though I am voting for Barack for other reasons, one of the most important of which is McCain's health).

When we spend so much time harping on frivilous BS like this, we wind up ignoring the real issues that we face. And, as I write this at the end of July, 2008, we are facing a lot of issues. Here is just a small list of them:

* Thanks to the recklessness of both banks and homeowners (And because of the federal bias towards home ownership), everyone is suffering, and inflation is through the roof. Some of my friends are spending half their income on gasoline to get to work.

* We have foreign debt to China reaching into the hundreds of billions of dollars

* Higher (and lower) education is degenerating

* Our healthcare system is a fu*&ing joke; we need to adopt Japan's system (private healthcare without the stupid pre-existing conditions; not "socialized medicine")

* The oil, airline, and construction industries are dead

* Our jobs are getting outsourced to countries that we shouldn't even have relations with

* There are no more security guarantees for Americans who work hard in old age

* Our divorce rates are ridiculous

* The American middle class is essentially a thing of the past

* New Orleans is still like Somalia

* We still haven't found and punished Osama for committing mass murder on 9/11

* China is hosting the Olympics, helping Sudan perpetrate a Holocaust, and no one seems to give a rat's a$$. We should boycott those Olympics just like we boycotted the Moscow games in 1980. I also support divestment.

There are probably another thousand issues to be mentioned, but I don't have the time or the energy to do so. Regardless, a presidential candidate's religion or sexual orientation wouldn't even be on the list. If we don't solve the important issues, then we will have to worry even more about anarcho-socialist radicalism in whitebread, middle-class neighborhoods than we will about radical islamism in New York City. Unless you want America to become another USSR, you need to keep your eye on the ball.
