You've got your horse before your feedbag here, with just desserts. Christian is the religion, Lutheran, etc is the CHURCH(es). Each one claims the franchise on God. The Catholic CHURCH drove me away with their demands that insisted we consider them "the one true Church" (their quote). Faith is like cheesburgher. If I go and eat at McD's, I pretty much know what to expect. Likewise, anywhere else.

The 1962 court may have been knee-jerking against the Kennedy Catholic hysteria that had recently been cast on the waters. I'm guessing, I was only twelve at the time. But I recall huge amounts of press in shock over a Catholic President.

But your big mistake in claiming that the different denominations are religion and Christianity is not can be compared to claiming that a penny is not money but gold is. Each is an entity with assigned value based on the other. The true value lies only in its concensus. It doesn't matter what the denomination is. There are many paths through the woods yet they remain one vast wasteland.
