Reader comment on item: Confirmed: Barack Obama Practiced Islam
in response to reader comment: Obama is a Muslim?

Submitted by donvan (United States), Aug 5, 2008 at 11:00

The assertion that .."Going to a Mosque a few times"... does not a Muslam make is overly simplistic. One may be baptised into the Christian belief, yet not be a 'Christian'. Yet one may assume that, unless one purposely rejects that belief, one at least ritually, subscribes to the basic principles of the Christian belief.

So it is with Mr Obama. The fact that his father was a Muslim, and his extended family is Muslam, and we have no indication that he has rejected one belief system to embrace another, and has maintained his Muslam name, has embraced a theology far removed from mainstream Christian teachings, centered around a fringe "Liberation theology" indicated the adaption rather than the adoption of the Christian belief system.

The "Christian" label may simply be a political convience. His father being Muslam also means that in the eyes of Muslams, unless he rejects 'Islam', in which case he is an apostate, with a death penality over his head, he remains a Muslam. Declarations to the contrary notwithstanding.
