Mainstream Muslims

Reader comment on item: [The American Muslim Council:] 'Mainstream' Muslims?

Mr Daniel Pipes: You have very correctly put that AMC is an extremist organization. As a matter of fact I do not know of any mainsream or moderate muslim organization in U.S.A. Moderate muslims, though in majority, are too scared of the militant minority to form an organization. Rashad Khalifa tried to make one and was killed by extremists in Tucson. It is an un-written rule and a well known reality that muslims may get away living anyway they want but if they become vocal with any idea different from the orthodox, they are blamed of blasphemy/apostacy and persecuted /eliminated. Dr Younus Shaikh, a medical professor in Pakistan, is on death row in Islamabad for expressing his liberal views to his class, accused of blasphemy, prosecuted by the non- theocratic govrnment of Musharraf.
