Reader comment on item: [The American Muslim Council:] 'Mainstream' Muslims?
in response to reader comment: From a scientific perspective

Vicki thanks for your reply and my apologies for tardiness in responding, my only excuse is assignment backlog and family responsibilities.

As I have indicated elsewhere, I am a History major and also study Theology. Not a science major.

That being said, I believe that you overstate the case against what I have said. I am not a scientist and am not referring to any science texts, so my language is not consice or accurate enough. Much of the spirit of what I said is put forward by serious working scientists (not just graduates, but science professionals who work in the hard sciences too like physics) who happen to believe in God, even if in language more appropriate to your point of view. If necessary I will go back to my notes from last year and double check the journal articles I read (both theology and science... God bless Blackwell for publishing both!)

No I do not dispute evolution, but my understanding is that we cannot prove it conclusively at this point, so essentially it is still a matter of faith. A matter of faith with lots of good circumstantial evidence that I concur with. It is a good explanation for what we see. I guess I should ask my wife about this to see how accurate what you have said regarding that is, she is a science graduate with a biology major, not to mention her biology post grad studies and work (in a vastly different field though). Although she finds this kind of stuff kind of boring, so getting a reply might be difficult :-)

As someone who used to be a practising athiest, I think you understate what it is that athiests believe. You seem to have decribed the agnostic position. Atheism is the catagorical denial of the existance of God, something we just cannot prove, just like belief in the existance of God. Each belief positon is beyond proof, they are both faith based positions. trust me, I am a theology student. (chuckles nefariously)

I have enjoyed this correspondence so far, please keep it up.

Abdul Rahman
