Reader comment on item: [The American Muslim Council:] 'Mainstream' Muslims?

Submitted by College Student (United States), Sep 1, 2006 at 11:37

Islam: Submission
Hezbollah: Party of 'God'
Al Quaeda: The Base or Foundation - also Islamic
Hamas: Islamic Resistance Movement
Jihad: To strive or struggle. By common definition, holy war.
AMC: American Muslim Council - a group that claims to be mainstream Muslim, but has still supported terrorism, etc.

A peaceful religion?

"Your women are tilth for you to cultivate so go to your tilth as ye wish".-Koran 2:223

"Know that Paradise is under the shades of swords."

"Fight against them until idolatry is no more and Gods religion reigns supreme. But if they desist, fight now more except the evil-doers."- Koran 2:193

"Against them make ready your strengh, including steeds of war, to strike terror into the hearts of the enemy."

"And slay them wherever you find them and drive them out of the places whence they drove you out for persecution is worse than murder."

"I shall be with you. Give courage to the believers. I shall cast terror into the hearts of the infidels. Strike off their heads, strike off the very tips of their fingers". . .- Koran 8:12

"Allah has bought from the Umma-- the true believers of Islam--their selves and their substance in return for Paradise; they fight in the way of Allah, killing and being killed. Their promis is written in the blood of the moon." 9:112

If one has read the Koran they may have noticed that it shifts slightly in its stance a few times. It may seem strange that in the first part of the Koran there is strong evidence of the violent nature of Islam, then towards the end, especially in 109, there are parts that seem to show a less violent nature. Is it possible that the Koran contradicts itself? Or did Mohammad change positions? (One thing to point out is that the chapters are by no means the same length - 109 consists of about 5 verses whilst 8 contains more like 20.)

External evidence points to a very violent nature in non-Western Muslims:

Islamic Studies at the University of New York said "There are a billion plus Muslims in the Arab world, 90 percent of whome support Hamas.

One cannot support Hamas while still claiming to be peaceful. The goals of Hamas are in no way peaceful, and by supporting the group you support its goals.

I will agree whole heartedly that most US Muslims are peaceful, but US Muslims do not represent all Muslims. It would not last very long if US Muslims did what Arab Muslims do all the time - treat women like chattel, etc. Many Arab Sheiks will tell the US all day that Islam is peaceful - and why wouldn't they? They have every motive to keep the West confused about the issue. But the Sheiks also preach violence and hatred agaisnt the US and Western civilization - claiming non existent attacks on Muslims as a "reason" when in fact no US attack in the Middle East was not first provoked by some act of Muslims. In the Gulf War it was Hussein's persecution of the Kurds. Today it stems from the Muslim - terrorist attacks of 9/11.
