Reader comment on item: [The American Muslim Council:] 'Mainstream' Muslims?
in response to reader comment: Extremist? A Muslim View

Submitted by Ronald (Canada), Feb 12, 2006 at 23:06

Despite the good works it does --which a secular society would do anyway -- organized religion and its secular ideological cousins (organized fascism and communism) are the source of much of the world's evil, murder, sadism, and violence.

The only thing that will save us is democracy and free expression and the right to criticize others and say what we want, including comments or cartoons that may be offensive. That doesn't preclude people from accepting religion and leading their version of a "moral" life-- all power to you. Just leave we seculars alone and give us our rights, too. We must respect others; majority and minority.

I am a gay man and have no problem with the gross criticism about me by Muslims, as offensive as it has been (including many who have said I should be slaughtered because I am gay). This is also your right in the West -- to express how you feel. We have not launched street protests because my minority is raped, tortured and executed in your countries.

At the end of the day, the truth will prevail and we must all be able to live with each other.
