Muslims In India

Reader comment on item: [The American Muslim Council:] 'Mainstream' Muslims?

Submitted by Kuldip Gupta (India), Jul 21, 2003 at 12:40

India is a country which houses the second largest population of Muslims in the World (Pakistan comes third). Though amongst several muslim countries it is portrayed that muslims are opressed lot ( opressed by Government) , the facts are very different. The Muslims in India form a 13% segment of India's population. There is a regular large illegal exodus of Muslims from Bangladesh into India. No sane person would migrate illegally to a country which as a matter of state policy is opressing them.

Yet they are opressed lot , largely due to the Muslim leadership in India. Its in their intrest that the Muslims in India do not get educated, do not get into the mainstream. If it happens so they would lose their stranglehold on these Muslims . Consequently the number of Muslim Engineers in India is less then 2% in India, number of Muslim senior beuraucrats is less then 1% . Yes the only place where they far outnumber their National weightage is in Indian prisons. There they would be about 75%. In most of the criminal acts in the country the person accused is normally a Muslim.Lack of education and the rhetoric of the so called leaders act as motivating factors for these people to turn into offenders of law.
