Reader comment on item: [The American Muslim Council:] 'Mainstream' Muslims?
in response to reader comment: COME ON NOW!

Obviously not all, or even most women who call themselves "Muslim" are abused. And many women from all cultures and beliefs may be in abusive relationships, this is the unfortunate reality. There is no doubt ,however, that the dogma of 'Islam' codifies the male perogative. Under this code, females are regarded as property with limited recourse to equality. Punishments may be executed by the male on the female. This may range from denial of affection, isolation, to physical corporal punishment , with care to avoid facial and visible marks. This is not so unique to 'Islam'. Punishments meted out by males to females in some Christian sects , with a stick the no bigger than the thumb, ie 'the rule of thumb'. However this was never part of Christian dogma, as it is in Islam.
