Reader comment on item: [The American Muslim Council:] 'Mainstream' Muslims?

Submitted by Mike (United States), Feb 17, 2006 at 13:23

I'm an American and I'm neither a Christian nor a Muslim. I dislike organized religion (Christianity and Islam alike), in my OPINION religion is nothing more than primitive superstition. It has been the "justification" for wars and murder for thousands of years. Look at most of the atrocities throughout history: The Inquisition, The Crusades, The Salem Witch Trials, The Jewish Holocaust, suicide cults such as Jonestown and Heaven's Gate, the Sept. 11th attacks, the list goes on and on. Why is it SOME religious fanatics feel the need to annihilate anyone who worships a different invisible man in the sky than they do, or worships the SAME invisible man in the sky but has different customs and practices for worshipping that invisible man? Muslims aren't the only terrorists. Look at Eric Rudolph and all the Christian nutcases who bomb abortion clinics? Look at the war between Catholics and Protestants in Ireland. When will the ignorance and stupidity end? What's funny is that Muslim terrorists are defying the words of their prophet.

It says in the Qur'an: "Do not take life, which Allah has made sacred, except through justice and the law. He orders this so that you may acquire wisdom" (6:151) and, "Do not take life, which Allah has made sacred, except for a just cause. If anyone is killed unjustly, We allow his heir (to seek justice) but do not allow him to exceed bounds when it comes to taking life, for he is helped (by the law)" (17:33). According to the Qur'an, killing a person unjustly is the same as killing all of humanity, and saving a person is the same as saving all humanity. (See 5:32.)

Yet Christianity is supposed to be a peaceful religion but the Bible actually ENCOURAGES violence.

"When your brother, the son of your mother, or your son or your daughter, or the wife of your bosom, or your friend who is as your own soul, entices you secretly, saying 'Let us go and serve other gods,' . . . you shall kill him, your hand shall be first against him to put him to death, and afterwards the hand of all the people. You shall stone him to death with stones, because he sought to draw you away from the Lord your God." (Deuteronomy 13: 6-10)

I don't mean to sound Anti-Christian or Anti-Muslim, I think everyone has the right to believe whatever they want, and shouldn't be attacked or oppressed for their beliefs, at the same time this whole scandal about the cartoon is rediculous. I can't believe that Muslims are actually calling for the cartoonist to be killed. Free speech should never be hindered. If something offends you, too bad. If you pick up a newspaper that has a cartoon you don't like, wad it up and throw it in the garbage where you feel it belongs. Its just a freakin cartoon.
