All those references which say, Nafs means Soul are poor references.

The Arabic word for Soul is Ruh.

You have lots of misconception about Islam. You think, Muhammad (sws) brought Islam. If you think so, then you are very less informed about Islamic theology.

Actually, Islam came on earth with the first man and woman on earth. Since that day, God sent prophets (Anbiyah) and apostles (Rasul) time to time to remind the people about God and hereafter life and with the guidance, how to live a life on earth and how to worship and remember God.

Muhammad (sws) was just the last in the series of those prophets (Anbiyah). After him, God completed His guidance in the form of book Quran, that will remain with mankind unaltered forever and now on, no more prophet will come, instead now it is the duty of Ummah (Muslims) to convey this guidance to rest of mankind.
